Program Information
Earn 12 – 18 hours of academic credit while improving your English.
Receive full admission to the undergraduate program after successful completion.
Begin in August or January.
Admission Requirements

- ELI Placement Exam:
- Level 5 or 6 in UA-ELI Intensive English Program

Note: A minimum level of English is not required for the Pre-Pathway Program. Students not meeting the minimum English requirement for Pathway to UA will study full-time intensive English until ready for admission.
Length of Study & Credit Earned
- You will need one or two semesters to complete the program and begin full undergraduate study at The University of Alabama.
- You will earn 12-18 hours of academic credit, will satisfy the UA English proficiency requirement, and will be ready for full-time undergraduate study.
One-Semester Program
Qualifications
To qualify for the One-Semester Program, you must be admitted into the Pathway to UA and meet one of the following English proficiency requirements.
- iBT 79 or higher
- TOEFL Essentials 8.5 or higher
- IELTS 6.0 or higher
- PTE 54 or higher
- DET 110 or higher and
- ELI Placement in Level 5/6
Credits and Courses
Earn 12-15 academic credits. Each course has 3 credit hours.
- ELC 110: Academic Speaking
- ELC 111: Academic Writing
- 1-3 other undergraduate courses
Optional: 1 intensive English course (no credit hours)
Tuition Cost
$16,200 for one semester
Completion Requirement
You must pass all classes with grades of C or higher. Each class may be repeated a maximum of one time.
Two-Semester Program
Qualifications
To qualify for the Two-Semester Program, you must be admitted into the Pathway to UA, and meet the following English proficiency test requirements
- iBT 72 – 78
- TOEFL Essentials 8.0
- IELTS 5.5
- PTE 51 – 53
- DET 100 and
- ELI Placement in Level 5
Credits and Courses
Earn 15-18 academic credits. Each course is 3 credit hours.
During the 1st semester:
- Take 1 undergraduate course
- Take 2-3 intensive English courses (no academic credit)
During the 2nd semester:
- Take 3-5 undergraduate courses
- Optional: 1 intensive English course (no academic credit)
Tuition Cost
$24,975 for two semesters

Pre-Pathway Program
Qualifications
To qualify for the Pre-Pathway Program, you must be admitted the English Language Institute, and meet the following English proficiency test requirements:
- iBT 0 – 71 or
- TOEFL Essentials 0 – 7.5 or
- IELTS 0 – 5.0 or
- PTE 10 – 50 or
- DET 10 – 50 and
- ELI Placement in Level 1 – 4
Credits and Courses
Take 3-4 intensive English courses (20-22 hours/week, no academic credit).
Study intensive English for 2-6 months (depending on your level of English).
Qualify for admission to Pathway to UA by completing ELI Level 4 with a 2.0 GPA or by obtaining one of the minimum test scores.
Tuition Cost
$3,000 per ELI session (6 or 8 weeks)
Completion Requirement
Students in the Pre-Pathway Program must pass all classes with a grades of C or higher.
